On January 15th, 1919, Boston experienced a disaster unlike any other. A massive tank filled with molasses burst open in the city's North End, unleashing a wave of sticky sweetness that crashed through the streets like a tsunami. The flood, soaring to 25 feet in some areas, was horrifying. Structures succumbed under the power of the treacherous goo.
The aftermath was heartbreaking. Twenty-one people lost their lives, and many more were injured. The flood also caused a great deal of destruction to property, leaving a trail of sticky residue in its wake.
